– Most Muslims now a days are not aware that we are all being tested by Allah (SWT). Our faith is being tested. This test is what the Holy Quran mentioned as “fitnah”.
“According to Al-Azhari, “The Arabic word fitnah includes meanings of testing and trial. The root is taken from the phrase fatantu al-fiddah wa’l-dhahab (I assayed (tested the quality of) the silver and gold), meaning I melted the metals to separate the bad from the good.
Similarly, Allaah says in the Qur’an (interpretation of the meaning): ‘(It will be) a Day when they will be tried [yuftanoona] (punished, i.e. burnt) over the Fire!’ [al-Dhaariyaat 51:13], meaning, burning them with fire.” (Tahdheeb al-Lughah, 14/196).
Another early Muslim scholar, Ibn al-A’raabi, has said, “summed up the meanings of fitnah when he said: “Fitnah means testing, fitnah means trial, fitnah means wealth, fitnah means children, fitnah means kufr, fitnah means differences of opinion among people, fitnah means burning with fire.” (Lisaan al-‘Arab by Ibn Manzoor).” (Zaytuna College)
– Most of us are unaware, that the fitnah of arguing of what Islam is and what is not, what is a Muslim is and what is not, that sometimes lead to one person proclaiming that he or she is the holder of truth. the ultimate truth, without knowing that he or she is actually being tested of patience, perseverance, and good character.
– The question then we ask ourselves, how do I know what a good character is? Answer: Look at the prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. He is the perfect example of good character, Allah says about him: “You have indeed in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern (of conduct) for any one whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and who engages much in the Praise of Allah.” [Quran, 33:21]
– O Allah, I seek refuge in You from weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, anxiety and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from the torments of grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials and tribulations of life and death. (Al-Bukharee, Muslim]
